WhatsApp lets you export any chat as a plain text file: open the chat, tap the menu, choose More, then Export chat, then Without media. Always export Without media: the file stays small and parses fast, and media placeholders are excluded from your word count anyway. The names on the card come straight from the export, so they appear exactly as saved in your contacts. Group chats work too: the split bar shows the top two senders and notes how many other people share the rest.

If your chat export will not parse

If you exported With media you probably have a .zip file; unzip it and drop the _chat.txt inside. If WhatsApp is set to a language with a very unusual date format, a handful of lines may be skipped, but the parse summary always tells you exactly how many messages were read so you can judge the result. And if nothing parses at all, re-export the chat fresh from WhatsApp rather than copying text by hand, since manual copies lose the timestamp lines the parser needs.
