How to make a word cloud from a WhatsApp chat

Every WhatsApp conversation has a vocabulary of its own: the nicknames, the inside jokes, the one word your group repeats fifty times a week. This tool builds a WhatsApp chat word cloud from the export file you already have: it reads the .txt, counts how often every word appears, and draws the top 60 as a colorful 1080 x 1080 image you can download as a PNG. The more a word is used in the chat, the bigger it appears, so the picture that comes out is a genuine portrait of how your group actually talks.

How the word cloud generator reads your chat export

Everything runs in your browser. When you drop in the .txt file that WhatsApp produces from Export chat, the tool parses each line with the same tolerant matching used by our chat analyzer: it understands both the Android format (date, time, dash, name, message) and the iOS format with square brackets, handles 12 hour and 24 hour clocks, and stitches multi line messages back together. System notices such as encryption banners and subject changes are ignored, and so are media placeholders like image omitted and Media omitted, so they never pollute the cloud. The remaining text is lowercased, links are stripped, and around 60 common English filler words like the, and, that and just are removed so the interesting words rise to the top. The 60 most frequent words are then placed on a canvas along an outward spiral: each word is measured, and the tool keeps moving it along the spiral until its bounding box no longer overlaps any word already placed. Font size scales with frequency from 18 to 110 pixels, and the words rotate through the WaBestie palette of greens, blue, amber and pink on a clean white background.

See the most used words in your chat

The size of every word is proportional to how often it was typed, so the most used words in the chat jump out immediately. People turn that picture into:

• Group anniversaries: post the cloud in the group on its birthday and watch everyone argue about the biggest word
• Friendship and couple keepsakes: a year of chat turned into a single square image, ready for a WhatsApp status or a printed frame
• Farewells: when someone leaves a work or university group, the cloud makes a better goodbye than a paragraph
• Curiosity: find out whether your family group really does say tomorrow more than any other word
• Community insight: admins of large groups can see at a glance which topics dominate the conversation

Tips for a richer word cloud from a chat export

Export the chat without media; the file is far smaller and the words are what matter here. Longer chats make richer clouds, so a word cloud from a chat export with real history beats one from a chat that started last week. If the layout feels crowded or you just want a different arrangement, click Shuffle layout: the spiral starts from a new random angle each time, so every shuffle gives a fresh composition with the same words. The download is always the full 1080 x 1080 image even if the preview looks small on your phone.

If the word cloud will not generate

If the tool says it could not read any messages, make sure you exported the chat from WhatsApp itself (open the chat, tap the menu, More, Export chat, Without media) and that you are loading the .txt file, not the .zip some phones produce; unzip it first. If a word you expected is missing, it may be shorter than three letters or on the stopword list of common filler words. Words that would not fit anywhere on the canvas without overlapping are skipped, which only tends to happen in chats where one word dwarfs all the others.
