Why does copied WhatsApp text include dates, names and quote marks?

Text that has been forwarded, quoted or copied out of a WhatsApp chat picks up baggage at every step. Quoted replies add a “>” mark to the start of each line. Copying several messages at once, or pasting from an exported chat, drags in timestamps like [12/07/26, 10:31:22] on iPhone or “12/07/26, 10:31 – Name:” on Android, plus the sender name before every single line. Unsaved contacts show up as bare phone numbers on their own lines, photos and voice notes turn into “<Media omitted>” placeholders, and the gaps where messages were removed leave stacks of empty lines. How to clean a forwarded WhatsApp message in one paste

Paste the messy text and the cleaner rebuilds it line by line, entirely in your browser. Each cleaning rule is a separate pass with its own checkbox, and all of them are on by default. Leading “>” quote marks are stripped from the start of every line. Lines that contain nothing but a phone number, with 7 to 15 digits and optional spaces, dashes or brackets, are dropped, as are “<Media omitted>”, “image omitted” and similar placeholders WhatsApp inserts for attachments. Runs of blank lines collapse into a single one so paragraphs stay separated without the dead space. How to remove timestamps from a copied WhatsApp chat

Two of the six rules exist purely to remove timestamps from copied chat text. Bracketed timestamps in the iPhone export style are removed together with the sender name that follows them, and the Android style “date, time – Name:” prefix gets the same treatment, including AM/PM times. The name is only ever removed directly after a timestamp, so an ordinary line like “Note: bring cake” is never touched. The result reads as if you had typed the words yourself: no dates, no clock times, no “Name:” in front of every sentence.

When you need to copy a WhatsApp message without names and times

• Re-forwarding an announcement to another group without the trail of “>” marks and old sender names from the first forward.
• Turning a copied group conversation into clean notes: meeting decisions, addresses, shopping lists or travel plans without the timestamps.
• Pulling a recipe, set of instructions or testimonial out of a chat so you can save or share just the useful text.
• Tidying a pasted WhatsApp chat export before dropping it into an email, document or support ticket.

Keep the names, drop the times, or strip everything

Paste first, then look at the checkboxes. If the sender names are part of what you want to keep, untick the two timestamp rules and only the brackets and prefixes will survive; if you want a pure transcript with names, untick everything except the blank-line rule. The “Chars removed” stat is a quick sanity check: if it reads zero on text you know is messy, the clutter probably uses a format the rules do not target, so scan the first line and untick or re-tick rules to see what changes. Use “Send on WhatsApp” to open the cleaned text straight in a new chat, or “Copy cleaned text” to paste it anywhere else.

Why is a timestamp or phone number still there after cleaning?

Phone-number lines are only removed when the entire line is the number; a number with a name next to it stays, because deleting it could destroy real content. A timestamp that survives usually means a hand-typed date: the rules cover the standard WhatsApp export formats with day, month and year separated by slashes, dots or dashes, and a date in any other shape is left alone on purpose. And if a real message disappeared, it almost certainly looked exactly like a placeholder, for example a line that just said “image omitted”; untick that rule, copy, and re-tick it for next time.
